by: David Young

Manorburn Dam Photos

Manorburn. Around 60-70 mm in shaded area in main basin - thin and weak further out. Surface dry and hard but ice creaky.
Good skate close in only. Edges softening and water showing in other parts. Last skate I think.... (melting fast)
Oh well - hopefully colder next year! Dave

Manorburn. Ice in the main basin in shaded area. 80mm+ near the bank and down to 60mm a little way out. Water showing in places on the other side. Slight melt at the edged but easy to get on.
Good skate in shaded area but not far out. Ice a bit creaky as it thins.
Needs a few frosts!! (won't hold much longer if none!)
Report Updated: Saturday 19th July 2008 5.30pm Lake Ida
by: Craig Armstrong_Fray and Janos Kaszala

Lake Ida Photos

Looks like there was lots of rain overnight and the weather conditions were warm light northwest wind on Saturday.
Ice conditions:
Lake Ida Hockey Rink:
Soft and no Ice round the edges.
The Enclosure:
Melted on the western end, soft and not skateable on the eastern end.
Main Lake:
Has about an inch of water over the Ice and the Ice is soft, not suitable for skating. There is more ice towards Mt Ida but still dodgy.
Doesn’t look good for a skate unless we get more frosts. :-(

Manorburn Over 80 mm in main basin on shaded side.
60-70 mm out towards the middle good skating out from shaded corner. Ice rough in places due to thaw and refreezing. (softens during day as temps increase)
Report Updated: Sunday 13th July 2008 5.15pm: Coal Pit Dam
by: Glen Cameron and Kushla Proffitt

Coal Pit Dam Photos

Found 50mm of snow ice here, not safe to skate on, very soft around the edges.

Report Updated: Sunday 13th July 2008 4.30pm: Idaburn Dam
by: Glen Cameron and Kushla Proffitt

Idaburn Dam Photos

Found ice here too but only an inch thick and full of bubbles, so not safe to skate on or even stands on.

Report Updated: Sunday 13th July 2008 3.30pm: Manorburn Dam
by: Glen Cameron and Kushla Proffitt

Manorburn Dam Photos

Finally a skate, Glen had to do a hop-skip-jump to get to the good stuff as it was thinner around the edges here too. The middle was a good 80mm thick but it was snow ice so dodgy in places. Someone had skated on it earlier that day so Glen felt it safe to have a go although it was softening with the warmer weather, a few more frosts would be good.

Report Updated: Sunday 13th July 2008 12.00pm: Lake Middleton
by: Glen Cameron and Kushla Proffitt Photos: Glen & Kush

Lake Middleton Photos

Lots of ice but full of bubbles and very thin around the edges, this made it very hard to get to the good ice. Glen took the risk but was shitting himself as it was cracking badly and softening, only 30-40mm thick.

Report Updated: Saturday 12th July 2008 5.00pm: Pukaki Overflow Spillway by: Glen Cameron and Kushla Proffitt

Pukaki Overflow Spillway

Thought we’d check this out as it has frozen in the past. We took the dangerous climb down the rocks and the ice was gorgeous black ice. The only problem is it was only 30-40mm thick and softening; all that was left was the dangerous climb back up. Be very careful or find another way in, not safe really on the rocks as they move and are slippery.

We saw this ice looking down from the road driving through to Tekapo on the canal roads and went for a look. All the lakes/ponds had ice but it was snow ice and only 25mm thick, not quite enough to skate.

Report Updated: Thursday 10th July 2008 9.06pm: Lake Clearwater and Camp by: Alan Knowles Photos: Alan Knowles and Mark Easton

Lake Clearwater and Camp Photos

Fantastic conditions at 5pm today - 3degrees.Lake Clearwater: Night-time frosts of -9 deg for July 7,8, and 9 saw large expanses of black (steel) ice up to 70 mm thick with trout visible beneath. Ice thickest at eastern end of lake where snow lies on the surface in the shade of Mt Guy. Thickness thinning to the western end. Easy access to the island and good ice around it. Hundreds of goose carcasses on ice at the western end after aerial cull today.

Lake Camp: Lake level very low meaning the ice at the west end is no longer shaded by the pines. Gin clear ice barely skateable, varying between 50 mm to 20 mm over short distances. More Photos here.
