The Rd Lakes are on Private Property,
and permission for access needs to be gained before a trip in is
planned, They are on Lake Coleridge Station and it is a working farm
so Please take the time get permission. Once there please respect
the access and leave no rubbish. Situated 1 kilometre North West of the Lyndon Road, it looks like it used to be one lake similar to Little Lake Ida and Lake Ida and is now separated by a shingle scree. Some of the clearest black ice we have ever seen. |

If you are travelling from Lake Coleridge to Lake Lyndon, the turn off to the Red Lake/s is just past a small bridge on the left about 2k past the Ida/Olympus (Harper Road) turn off on the Lyndon Road Below: Unfortunately still in low resolution you can see the turn off after the bridge. |

Driving Instructions from Christchurch to The Red
Lakes Leave Christchurch through Yaldhurst, Turn Left at the signposted corner for Hororata You should cross over the railway lines and head west, on reaching Hororata, turn left at the Hororata Roundabout. follow the main road sweeping right by the sawmill. Keep going until you come to the Stop sign that is also signposted Mt Hutt Left, Windwhistle Right, go straight over from the Stop sign Heading for Lake Coleridge, Turn Right at the signposts for Mount Olympus and Lake Ida on to Homestead Road. go past Harper Road on the left and continue on to Lyndon Road. About 2 km down Lyndon Road you cross a bridge just after this Turn Left up a track to the Red lakes. Recommended that 2 wheel drive cars don't go down the last 300mts to the Lake as they may have have difficulty climbing the hill back out. Park at the top of the Hill. 4WD's should be fine Apparently its about a 200mt walk between Lakes over a shingle scree. Driving Instructions from Christchurch to the Red Lakes (Via Porters Pass) Main Road. Note: the Lyndon Road is frequently closed and is described as a fair weather Road. Head out of Christchurch through Yaldhurst follow the signposts through Darfield, through Springfield, head up Porters Pass and on towards Lake Lyndon which is on the way down Porters Pass on the Left. Just before you get to Lake Lyndon turn Left and drive around the lake on the Lyndon Road,kepp going on the Lyndon Road, the turn to the Red Lakes will be on the right just before a Bridge approximately 4K from the main road Recommended that 2 wheel drive cars don't go down the last 300mts to the Lake as they may have have difficulty climbing the hill back out.
