On The Aardwolfs Southern Tour. Day One 22nd July 2006 | After a wait for chains from the van hire company and managing to shoehorn 23 people from all over the country into the vans, with all their hockey gear and personal luggage into the trailers. We left the Alpine at about 9.30am, the weather was what we ordered: clear blue skies and sunshine (which was to last for the whole trip) showing Craig, Dan and Daniel from Auckland, and Andy from Nelson that we can turn on the weather when required.
| First stop was Oamaru for lunch at Subway, how we managed to arrive just in time for the "2 for 1" deal we don't know however almost everybody upgraded to a 12 inch Sub for the price of a 6. After lunch we loaded up and headed for a fuel top up at Palmerton, we figured the extra size of Glens vans cargo and his lead foot was the reason for the 10% more fuel they used! |
| |
| Expecting snow and ice over the Pig Route, we were surprised that the road that was closed on Friday, was snow and ice free. On arrival at Naseby with a couple of hours to kill some of us visited the Automobile Museum, while others found the ice cream shop. We then decided to check out Coal Pit Dam of TV Cheese add fame. | |

We were rewarded with lots of ice and spent the next hour skating on the dam, the few millimetres of light snow slowed down the pucks but the ice was great to skate on. Skating on Natural Ice, was a
new
experience for a few. We then loaded up and returned to the rink for an hours drills and practice, Joern trying curling for the first time and Katie showing lots of potential as a hockey player. The
impromptu Horseshoe drill at one end was well supported with several variations being used.
| ||
| Travelling to Alexandra in the dark didn't take long and we were soon settling in to the Alexandra Courts Motel, nice to see the welcome on the wall as we arrived our thanks to Colin and Jude for their hospitality. Loading up the vans we hit the Pie Cart and Kentucky Fried for tea. |
| |
| The Alexandra Teams we played got somewhat physical and both games could have benefited by a more sociable approach from the Alexandra Teams however Alexandra came out the winner of both games on the day. | |
| We presented a gear bag to the best player in the Alexandra junior side and bottle of wine for Diane's input in organising them. |

| As always this trip is an opportunity for people to try new things and Jeremy stepped up to the challenge and produced a "Player of the Game" performance by trying goalie for the first time. he was awarded the Jon Jonsson: Yellow Swedish Hockey Shirt to wear for the first time and this was to become a coveted trophy for the weekend. Each recipient was responsible for picking the next Aardwolfs Player of the match who then got to wear the yellow shirt for half a day, Jeremy, and Matt for the Alex Games. We retired to our units where the odd ale was consumed, Unit 9 also had the first game of Meow the card game of choice for the trip. | |||

On The Aardwolfs Southern Tour. Day Two 23rd July 2006 |
| |
Leaving pretty much on time at 9.10am the only excitement for the morning was The Armstrong Freys attempt to burn their unit down while cooking breakfast, the smoke detector decided that
activation
was required. Arriving at the Queenstown rink we watched their brand new Zamboni grooming the ice and Tracy Neil and her team arriving,
| |
| |
| Glen and Martin officiated in an evenly matched game, the lead swapped and either team could have won, it was great for our teams to play an equivalent team and with the Aardwolfs winning in the end. |
| ||
| The second game against the Jurassic's was also to be a close game with the Aardwolfs leading then the Jurassic's equalising, and finally at 3-3 with 6 minutes to go the Jurassic's managed to steal a couple of quick goals to finish off. Both were great games played in good sprits, we enjoyed it so much we will be back ! | ||

| We retired to Monty's for a few ales, lunch, and some socialising. Then a few set out to explore Queenstown. The yellow shirt went to Joern for the first game and Nik for the second in Queenstown. |
| |
| We loaded up the vans and arrived in Alex about 8.00pm, after showers and foiled by the supermarket closing earlier than expected, we went into town for Chinese, others for MacDonald's. Card school was in and others hit the sack early suffering from the night before. Last ones to bed about 3.00am | |

On The Aardwolfs Southern Tour. Day Three 24th July 2006 | After a bit of a lay in and waking to Philippa making use of the trampoline, most people were somewhat recovered, the vans were reloaded, funny how it all goes in the trailer much better the 4 or 5th time, we headed off to Lower Manorburn Dam to see if there was any ice.
| After Clive missed a turn off, his scenic tour through the back roads gave all a view of the beautiful Central Otago countryside. When we finally arrived at the Dam there was heaps of ice and for an hour an impromptu game of hockey broke out, with the wind blowing and the sun shining, the ice surface soon became a little wet and several people unexpectedly practiced their superman dives in the surface water. |

| Before any serious damage was done we loaded up and headed for Dunedin with a stop in Lawrence for ice creams and lunch. Arriving in the afternoon at the Adrian Motel, quickly turning it into a Chinese laundry with hockey gear spread out everywhere to air. |
| |
Most people
then went into town to play Laser strike. Tea was a mixture of Kebabs and takeaways of several descriptions. The games in Dunedin's fabulous facility were first against the women's team who over powered the Aardwolfs B team, wining by several goals, a couple of the girls showing exceptional skills.
| Once again an Aardwolfs Polo shirt was given to the player of the match. |
| |
| Aardwolfs Ice Hockey Club Vs The Dunedin Woman's | ||

Aardwolfs Ice Hockey Club Vs The Jets |
| Once again an Aardwolfs Polo shirt was given to the player of the match. |
| The games were again played in very good spirit and there were very few penalties given. Drinks and socialising with the locals followed. |
| |
Player of the match for the Aardwolfs and Yellow Shirt bragging rights, went to Ange for
game one and Glen for game two.

| Once back in Motel units it was party time with cards and calls of "Matt loves cows....moo, moo, moo", and "Jeremy may be a queen but everyone is his bitch", mixing with "Social's" and "Good Morning Sir's". a great and late time was had by all, last to bed about 7.00am by some reports. | ||

On The Aardwolfs Southern Tour. Day Four 25th July 2006 |
| |
| Sleep Was The Order Of The Day. | |||
| With some sleepy faces and only just awake, people were poured into the vans and we headed back to Christchurch, with most dozing or just plain asleep, stops were for grass hockey then ice creams and drinks in Timaru. |
| |
| Tea was once again BBQ and drinks in Ashburton at Keith's beautiful Homestead and many just lounged watching ice hockey on the DVD or playing snooker and pool, while others became acquainted with the Alpacas and Lamas, Scruffy and George enjoyed the company and Keith was an excellent host, our thanks to him again for looking after us. | ||
| Some had a look around some played snooker and others watched DVD's of Ice Hockey relaxing. | |||
Arriving at
the Alpine at about 7.00pm we all headed for home after surviving yet
another Aardwolfs Southern Migration.
Already plans are afoot for next year, with both Dunedin and Queenstown teams wanting to travel to Christchurch for return Matches and our Auckland and Nelson visitors wanting to return for next years Aardwolfs Southern Migration. |
