Staveley Skating Rink (from Bush,
Bullocks and Boulders) The Development of the Skating rink in 1949 portrays one of the finest examples of community spirit seen in the district. In all projects access is a "must" and while it was known the required thickness of Ice could be produced, the promoters in the early stages had to contend with approximately a mile of swamp, bush, river bank and the river itself. The casual visitor driving along the present sealed road would find it difficult to imagine that 27 years ago walking or travelling on horseback would be the best means of getting to the rink. The local people built the road and carted the stones to fill the swamp-shingle where the foundation was solid enough-and put in drains to protect the road. At one working bee on road development there were 11 vehicles and their owners assisting ton the job. Over the years the river has created its share of problems by washing away some of the earlier bridges and it was not until the present one built by the Army did patrons have safe access. Another early problem was water seepage as a result of the rink being man made and located in a river bed. The problem was eventually solved by the use of silt clay using a tractor, a set of harrows and hours of pudding. For many years lighting was provided by an engine and generation plant and it is only since 1970 that main line power has been used. In 1974 a curling rink was added to the skating ones and it is proving very popular with a wide range of participants. The latest project is the construction of a modern amenities complex which will provide an office, lounge and toilet facilities all in one building. Some refreshments available at the shop. 02/07/2021: Currently Staveley Ice Skating & Curling Rinks are raising funds to add refrigeration to the rinks over winter.
