Information: Lake Ida is the best known Natural Ice skating area in Canterbury, it has been a popular spot for years and usually has the most reliable ice. Little Lake Ida and Lake Ida used to be one Lake. The gravel scree as it continues to fall has slowly been increasing the gap between them. Mount Ida shadows Lake Ida and Ice usually starts forming from Late May through to August, the Northwest winds tend to funnel down the valley and destroy the ice with waves.
