Smooth Ice, it will hold with more frosts.

Tuesday  8th July 2009 7.08pm: Poolburn Dam
From David Young by email

Thick ice in the northern bay, a light snow coverage - bit crunchy - slow skating. The access Track was frozen first thing then turned muddy mid morning.
Seems the ice changes very quickly with the weather.

Monday  6th July 2009 11.50pm: Red Lakes
From Fred van Slooten by email
For Sunday: Red Lakes. Snow ice on top and slushy.
Would be skateable after a frost but will be rough.

Sunday  5th July 2009 9.51pm: Poolburn Dam
From David Young by email
A hard but rough surface. Thick ice in North bay. Water showing around some of the rocks, and cracks in other parts of lake.
Great skate and wind powered skate. Weather was bleak.
Fantastic place. The track was muddy and slushy in parts. Needs a 4wd. (Plan for the unexpected) Update coming next Friday or Sat

From David Young by txt.

Saturday  4th July 2009 11.58am: Idaburn Dam
From David Young by txt.
Good Skating in the Idaburn Gorge, A good ice surface: wet but hard ice.
Thursday 2nd July 2009 12.08pm: Hooker Lake
From Alan Knowles by email
One and a half hour walk to the lake, a dusting of snow when we arrived and bombproof ice, too deep to measure. Smooth black ice and fast with shallow snow drifts which were easy to avoid. The snow started falling and was 100mm deep when we left at 3 pm, but easily light enough to skate through. No noises whatever from the ice!!!!

Wednesday 1st July 2009 12.08pm: Tasman Glacier Lake  From Alan Knowles by email
Half hour walk to the lake. Ice depth 8cm at southern end tapering to 3cm and open water to north. Kilometres of good ice with parallel cracks seeping water into fine 3mm snow cover. Big bergs and lots of them, though one rolled over in frightening fashion and noisy ice. Spectacular!

Tuesday 30th June 2009 7.34pm: Poolburn Dam (Poolburn Reservoir) From David Young by email
A NEW PLACE TO SKATE
Best of all today was Poolburn Dam. Fantastic scenery. The North part of the dam was too thick to drill through. Ice on the north side was a little lumpy with skiffs of powder snow. Great ice on South half of the dam. The whole was dam frozen in. An awesome skate.
The area is huge with islands and rocks to skate around.
Note: the road (from Ida Valley) is officially closed and I would  recommend a 4WD and some brains. Area is bleak and would be tough in bad weather. Don't go if there is snow on the range or on the way up or unsettled forecast (or with unreliable transport.... or people!). Most fantastic place I have skated yet. Wow!

Tuesday 30th June 2009 7.34pm: Lower Coalpit Dam
From David Young by email
Lower Coalpit. Ok in the shade only. It will soften in the sun and need frosts.
Tuesday 30th June 2009 7.34pm: Hoffmans Dam
From David Young by email
Hoffman Dam - all skateable - 60 - 80 mm. It will soften in the sun and need frosts.
